Counting Down to the Most Important Day of Your Life
Your due date is not just a date on the calendar — it represents the culmination of 40 weeks of growth, change, preparation, and anticipation. Counting down to your due date can help you stay focused on your prenatal care timeline, prepare your home and birth plan, schedule leave from work, and emotionally connect with the milestone ahead.
What to Accomplish Each Trimester Before Baby Arrives
First Trimester (Weeks 1–13)
- Schedule your first prenatal appointment
- Begin prenatal vitamins with folic acid (400–800 mcg)
- Inform your OB-GYN of all medications and supplements
- Complete first-trimester genetic screening
- Stop alcohol, smoking, and limit caffeine to <200mg/day
Second Trimester (Weeks 14–27)
- Schedule the anatomy ultrasound (18–22 weeks)
- Complete glucose screening test (24–28 weeks)
- Begin planning nursery and baby registry
- Sign up for childbirth classes
- Research and choose a pediatrician
Third Trimester (Weeks 28–40)
- Pre-register at your birthing hospital
- Pack your hospital bag by week 36
- Complete Group B Strep test (35–37 weeks)
- Install and inspect the infant car seat
- Finalize birth plan and review with OB-GYN
- Set up help for after birth — meals, childcare, support
What if my due date changes after ultrasound?
Due date revisions after ultrasound are common, especially if your LMP-based date differs from ultrasound measurements by more than 7 days (before 14 weeks) or 14 days (after 14 weeks). Update our countdown calculator with your revised EDD for an accurate countdown.
Is it normal to give birth before my due date?
Yes! Any birth between 37–42 weeks is considered normal term. About 57% of babies are born before their due date. Only about 4–5% arrive exactly on the due date. Don't stress if your countdown reaches zero — labor will begin when baby and your body are ready.
