#1 Pregnancy Essential

Folic Acid / Methylfolate

Prevents neural tube defects — must start before conception

🤰 Pregnancy
💡 What It Does

Folic acid is the most critical supplement for pregnancy. It is essential for the proper closure of the neural tube — the structure that becomes your baby's brain and spinal cord — which happens in the first 28 days after conception, often before you even know you're pregnant. Folic acid supplementation reduces the risk of neural tube defects (spina bifida, anencephaly) by up to 70%. Women with the MTHFR gene variant should use methylfolate (the active, pre-converted form).

👩 Who Should Take It

All women trying to conceive and all pregnant women. Start at least 3 months before trying to conceive.

⚗️ Recommended Dosage

400–800 mcg folic acid daily. Women with previous neural tube defect pregnancies or MTHFR variant: 5mg daily (prescription dose — consult doctor).

⏱️ How Long Until Results

Must be present before conception and through at least the first 12 weeks of pregnancy.

⚠️ Side Effects

Extremely safe. Folic acid is water-soluble — excess is excreted. No significant side effects at recommended doses.

🚨 Important Warnings

If you have the MTHFR gene variant, choose methylfolate rather than folic acid. Check your prenatal vitamin — it may already contain the recommended amount.
