Supports progesterone, regulates cycles, may improve luteal phase
Vitex agnus-castus (chasteberry) is one of the most widely used herbal supplements for female reproductive health. It works on the pituitary gland to increase LH (luteinizing hormone) production and support progesterone levels in the luteal phase (second half of the cycle). It is most studied for luteal phase defect (short second half of cycle), irregular periods, and PMS. While evidence is less robust than pharmaceutical options, multiple trials show benefit for menstrual irregularity.
Women with irregular cycles, short luteal phase (less than 10 days), PMS, or hyperprolactinemia (high prolactin).
400–500 mg standardized vitex extract daily, taken in the morning. Consistent daily use is essential — not just during certain cycle phases.
Most studies show benefit after 3–6 months of consistent use. Don't expect rapid results.
Mild digestive discomfort, headache, or acne in some women. May temporarily worsen acne at start of use.
Do NOT use if you have PCOS with elevated LH (already high LH is a feature of PCOS — vitex may worsen the LH:FSH ratio). Do not use with hormonal birth control or fertility medications. Stop when pregnancy confirmed.
